Guidance for: It's late and I can't make myself go to bed
You're not stalling, you're guarding
Start here
Set a fifteen-minute alarm and keep doing what you're doing. When it goes, brush your teeth. That's the whole plan.
Late-night refusal to sleep usually isn't about sleep. It's the only stretch of the day nobody is asking anything of you, and giving it up feels like giving up the last thing that was yours. That's worth naming before you try to fix it.
Then, if you have room for it
- Start with one physical step. Deciding to go to bed is hard; brushing your teeth is not.
- Take the reason seriously. If tomorrow has nothing in it for you, tonight will keep stealing the hours.
- Put the charger out of reach of the bed. The last hour is usually the phone's, not yours.
- Aim to be roughly an hour earlier, not fixed. A target you miss by ten minutes is one you'll keep.
