Guidance for: Sound, light, or people are too much

Cut the input before you try to think

Where are you right now?

Start here

Kill the light and the sound. Lamp off or curtains shut, earplugs or noise-cancelling in, phone face down. Sit for five minutes.

Nothing cognitive works while your nervous system is over-loaded. Reasoning, prioritising, and self-talk all fail here. Reduce input first; the thinking comes back on its own.

Then, if you have room for it

  • Drop the biggest input first: usually sound, then light, then people.
  • Cold water on wrists and face. It's a fast, physical nervous-system reset.
  • Make no decisions for ten minutes. Not even small ones.
  • If it's the same room every time, write that down. Somewhere in it there's a fixable environment problem.
