Guidance for: I don't know what the first step is

Turn the fog into an object

How much time do you actually have?

Start here

Say the task out loud, then write down the first thing your hands would touch. Just that one line.

Paralysis isn't laziness. The task is sitting in your head as a cloud, and a brain can't pick up a cloud. Right now the work is giving it edges.

Then, if you have room for it

  • Write the task down exactly as it lives in your head, however ugly. Getting it out of working memory is most of the job.
  • Ask a narrower question: what would my hands do first? Not "plan the trip" — "open a browser tab."
  • If the answer is still abstract, cut it in half again. Keep halving until it's something you'd do without negotiating.
  • Do the first action badly and on purpose. Once your hands have touched the task, the rest of it gets easier to reach.
